Beyond Gamification: Techniques for Engagement in Knowledge Management

the word Engagement

Engagement.

We all know how critical engagement is to driving

success when managing our knowledge and in so many additional non-trivial activities.

How do we engage people?

The easy and trendy answer is through gamification. Of course, I believe that is a good idea; however, we are too fixed on thinking this way that we often don't look around to use many additional methods and techniques.

So, use critical thinking and try adding cognitive techniques. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Supply them with knowledge on the topic. Knowledge drives a solid base and makes them feel confident with the topic.

  • Connect the topic to a known one- trendy or with other positive associations. People find it easy to engage with what seems familiar to them.

  • Drive their curiosity. We like riddles, mysteries,

  • When you present a solution, provide it with its rationale, one that people can easily relate to. When people understand not only with the WHAT, rather also with the WHY, they engage more. When you explain the rationale, they understand that the solution is clever and feel more willing to adopt it.

So don’t throw out gamification. Use it for engagement- but only as one of many good techniques.
