Defining knowledge and knowledge management proves as challenging as grasping the various forms and facets through which overt and covert knowledge permeates our surroundings. Consequently, efforts to define, manage, and discover optimal methods to map, structure, and share knowledge are diverse, complex, and inherently creative. From my standpoint, the profound meaning embedded in knowledge management processes lies in discerning the essentials from the mundane, determining importance, and understanding the most effective ways to preserve and share vital information. Each day, we grapple with an information deluge, necessitating decisions on what information merits preservation and the best methods. Essentially, we all function as knowledge managers throughout our daily lives.
As a profession, knowledge management prompts us to delve deeply into these processes, refining and imbuing them with genuine significance for organizations. This allows the replacement of cumbersome, protracted, and imprecise processes with streamlined, efficient ones, sparing employees from the need to reinvent the wheel with each endeavor. Knowledge management can make organizational knowledge more significant than the sum of individual employees' knowledge.
This expansive and diverse field fosters creativity, and my connection to it, emerging from a background in writing and the arts, often centers around creative dimensions. My substantial experience in knowledge management comes from the past year. After creating two escape room games at the Clandestine Immigration and Naval Museum in Haifa and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, I was tasked with crafting an escape room focused on knowledge management.
Throughout the room's development, I was intrigued by the intersections between an escape room and knowledge management. In an escape room, participants engage in immersive storytelling, actively contributing to the storyline rather than passively observing. This escape room unfolds within a mysterious organization, making knowledge management tasks integral to the narrative. The resolution of these tasks propels the plot forward, creating an experiential learning process intertwined with solving the mystery. Similarly, in knowledge management, it is advantageous, in my opinion, to contemplate how participants can actively engage with and influence the experience through their knowledge.
This experience heightened my awareness that, in any undertaking, particularly in knowledge management, emphasizing the user's or participant's importance and striving for an active experience significantly enhance the overall impact. When their expertise proves successful and meaningful when they feel genuinely involved, contributing, and effecting change, our work in knowledge management becomes profoundly more significant.
