Styling is image consulting that assists people to dress better according to their body structure and personality and in turn feel and look prettier. The field of Interior Design borrowed the term and coined Home Styling, i.e. adding pictures, decorative accessories, lighting, pillows, mirrors, complimentary furniture, drapes, etc. that add style to a dwelling.
So, what is Web Styling? You can guess… if you google the term you might find lots of information on Web Design, which is not entirely similar to Web Styling.
Web Styling is a term from the world of User Experience, a world that includes various fields. While these various fields and occupations bear several names, it's important to understand who does what. A functional, organized and useful website must be differed from an attractive website. An attractive website is not necessarily useful; the contrary is equally true.
A user interface/interaction/User Experience designer is responsible for organizing the website and its functionality to be user friendly; a graphic designer is responsible for making the website's display attractive while using the visual elements to convey messages. It should be noted that the website's attractiveness is tightly linked to interface planning. The lines, pictures and colors should all esthetically emphasize the functionally planned interface.
Returning to our term, let us borrow the term "styling" from the fields of fashion and interior design and refer to Web Styling as handling the websites' aesthetics and visual communication.
Well, what does a web stylist do?
Visual display: use of lines, shapes, compositions and textures.
Typography: organizing and designing texts: selecting fonts, size, spacing between words and lines, line length, etc.Branding: designing the website and organization's image including use of a logo and other visual elements that reflect the organization's values and goals.
Colors: color is an interesting graphic element since it is applied in other elements and has much influence. Some models are to color that are worth comprehending.
Pictures: selecting pictures for the website that fit its branding and the organization's "design language" while emphasizing the various resolutions in which the website is displayed, colors, size, etc.
